Did the movie “The Duchess” (2008) have a happy ending?

More, importantly, did the life of Georgiana the Duchess of Devonshire (nee Lady Georgiana Spencer, born 1757) have a happy ending?

Here are the answers to nearly every question about what happened to Georgiana:

Note: Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire is an ancestor of Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

Did Georgiana ever “produce a male heir”? Yes. She had a child with her husband, the 5th Duke. Her son was William Hartington Spencer and he became the 6th Duke.  So, both Georgiana and the 5th Duke felt like they had an heir who would carry on. (Though, “Hart” never had children.)

A Celebration of Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire: Book, Movie and DVD

The movie, “The Duchess”, is the story of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. Georgiana is the great-great-great-great aunt of Princess Diana. Georgiana was an English aristocrat who married at a young age, and experienced a variety of struggles in her marriage. The movie focuses on her marriage to William Cavendish, fifth duke of Devonshire; her friend (and her husband’s mistress) Lady Elizabeth “Bess” Foster; and on the crisis point of Georgiana’s affair with Charles, second Earl Grey. The movie is based on the book Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, written by Amanda Foreman, which won a Whitbread Prize for Biography.

My first blogpost is a reprint of my “About” page…

The Basics

I have always enjoyed biographies of women in history. As an elementary school student, I remember doing a report on a biography of Susan B. Anthony, and also being very interested in the life of Helen Keller. In high school, I read a biography about Catherine the Great of Russia, which fascinated me. As reflected in the blog title, my current fascination is Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire.

I am creating this site so that women may discuss women in history, and ways that their lives may have been different, if only those historical women had: a little more freedom, the right to own property, or had insight from other women, whose later writings empowered and educated women about ourselves.

Please do post a comment. Or, suggest a book. Or, leave a message about how you think Georgiana’s life could have been different if only she would have known…what?

More thoughts… (more…)
