1965 Video of 1777 play. School for Scandal, by Richard Sheridan.
The Duke and Duchess are characters in the play.
After having seen the movie the Duchess, I was inspired to find out what had become of her daughter – Eliza. I now know from your website that the Duchess of York (Fergie) is a distant relative. The connections between Fergie and Diana are much closer than one realises. Georgiana was portrayed very well in the movie. She was indeed placed in an intolerable position with the Duke but showed great dignity and compassion in the end; a woman of substance indeed.
Janeite,
Thanks for the interesting news.
I had not heard the two editions might be different. Now you have given me something else to research. There 385 pages of my version, plus footnotes and gory details of the French Revolution, so I don’t think things were left out. But, not sure.
My book does refer to the following versions:
1998: United Kingdom by Harper Collins
1999: United States by Random House, hardcover
2001: United States by Modern Library (a paperback edition, connected to Random House.) This is the version I have.
Now, there is a Georgiana’s World: The Illustrated Duchess of Devonshire in hardcover.

The book about Harriet seems great. Sad that she was left out of the film, as she was an important person in her own right. (Also, having Harriet around shows how Georgiana did not actually need Bess as much as it seems in the film.)

Thanks for the notes on Angelica Kauffman. I discovered who she was only recently. Yes, fascinating person. I want to learn more about her. A woman who was a founder of the art academy, yet, later, the academy did not allow women. Also, interesting scandal that she navigated through with the help of admiring friends.

Kimberly,
There was always the ‘controversy’ over the UK and US versions of GEORGIANA. As I wanted all that Foreman wrote, I ordered the UK edition; always heard a lot of the politics was cut for the US ed. True??
There is a biography of G’s sister: Janet Gleeson, Priviledge and Scandal: The Remarkable Life of Harriet Spencer, sister of Georgiana. It’s on my to-read list.
There are at least two fairly recent biographies on Angelika Kauffmann — since you use her portrait of the Spencer siblings, you might find them of interest (though notice the changes in spelling her name!): Angelica Goodden, Miss Angel: The Art and World of Angelica Kauffman; Angela Rosenthal, Angelica Kauffman: Art and Sensibility.
