Thanks to Heather at the Duchess of Devonshire’s Gossip Guide to the 18th Century for this link:
Fuchsia’s 18th Century Dress Project
This blog has wonderful photos of whole dresses, parts of dresses, and sewing materials to make your own dress. A very interesting study in fashion and fashion design.
From the about page:
I created this blog simply to document the process of my making a whole 18th century outfit – complete with stays, pocket hoops, petticoat, stomacher and stuff. I have the ambition to do at least 80-90% by hand and in as time typical materials as possible.
I might also feuture tips, tricks, how-to’s and other related things I’ve found in my search for inspiration.
An example of an 18th century dress found at Wikimedia Commons:
Thanks, Ti, for your on-the-spot comments. Very interesting.
The original painting hangs in a hall in Chatsworth. I saw was admiring it just a couple days ago. It is lovely though the artist made a booboo…and painted her with six toes. I personally prefer the Gainsborough of Georgiana just a few paintings down on the same wall. I believe the artist is Maria Cosway.
Oh. You mean with Georgiana as Diana in the clouds? If that is the one you mean, that is easy. In Amanda Foreman’s paperback version of the 2001 book, that picture (in black and white only) is captioned: “Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, by Maria Cosway, 1782. Georgiana, aged twenty-five, is portrayed as the goddess Diana, flying through the clouds.”
There are a lot of great pictures of Georgiana at my favorite sharing source – Wikipedia. Wikipedia states its rules and opinions on the copyright status of each piece. This picture is there at Wikipedia. The link is below for you.
Another good place to go for free art (though, mostly not historical, I guess, mostly current photos) is “Creative Commons”.

HELP!
I just saw the Duchess DVD (Kiera Knightly) and loved it! In one of the DVD’s special features there was a painting that I fell in love with and am trying to find it online. It’s the lady with the crescent moon on her head and flowing gown/robes. The only place I found this painting was as the cover of a book “Georgiana’s World” by Amanda Foreman. I have looked everywhere related to that (image on the book) as well but still no luck in finding the original painting, not even on Foreman’s site (and she has no contact info). I would like to find this painting without a bunch of book text all over it … So, I’m hoping you might be able to tell me who the artist is so I can better narrow my search for this painting. Here is the URL for the book cover image:

Thanks in advance for any help you can lend in helping me find this original painting! I REALLY appreciate it! 😀
Abundant Blessings!
